American soldier, a Lieutenant who was convicted of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam on 16 March 1968. The case became a symbol of the American conscience in an untenable war when 347 civilians were shot and dumped into a common grave; Calley was convicted of shooting 22 of them. After three and a half years of house arrest and prison, he was released on 9 November 1974. Calley became employed as an insurance salesman after the war. He married in 1976 and went to work in his father-in-law's jewelry store. He became a certified gemologist and took over the management of the store, living a prosperous, peaceful life in Columbus, OH. Calley is known as a nice, average guy with a pleasant sense of humor, 5'3", proud of his son and his two Mercedes cars. Sometime in 2005 or 2006, Calley divorced his wife Penny, and moved to downtown Atlanta to live with his son, William Laws Calley III. In October 2007, Calley agreed to be interviewed by the UK newspaper the Daily Mail to discuss the massacre, saying, "Meet me in the lobby of the nearest bank at opening time tomorrow, and give me a certified cheque for $25,000, then I'll talk to you for precisely one hour." When the journalist arrived to question Calley without a cheque, Calley left. Link to Wikipedia biography
