British writer, a poet, critic and dramatist prominent among the literary figures of his day. At age 12, Henley had T.B. of the bone and one leg was amputated below the knee. Though his education was periodically interrupted, he completed Oxford. At the age of 24, he went to Joseph Lister, who saved his other gangrenous foot. During his 20 months of treatment with Dr. Lister, he wrote his famed work, "Invictus." ("I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.") Henley was married for 25 years with one daughter born in 1888, the same year as his first book of poems was published. He lived in acute poverty until age 50. His last book, "Hawthorne and Lavender" was published in 1901. Never hardy, his last few years were spent in semi-retirement. While ailing in 1902, he fell while attempting to board a train that had begun to move. He never recovered and died suddenly on 7/11/1903. Link to Wikipedia biography
