German astronomer whose main field of work was in the field of spectrophotometry. He was the brother of the astronomer Friedrich Becker. From 1953, Becker was director of the University of Basel. In 1976, he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1977 he received the Karl Schwarzschild Medal of the Astronomical Society for his work "The Galactic Structure from Optical Observations". He died on 20 November 1996 in Binningen, aged 89.
