Dutch physician and physiologist. Place dissertated on 29 June 1867 under Frans Donders, who called him his best pupil. It was a study of the the propagation of the contraction gulf of voluntary muscles in frogs. He first assisted the biochemist prof Adriaan Heynsius in Leiden. On 15 June 1871 he was appointed professor of physiology in Amsterdam (UvA). On 2 October 1871 he held the inaugural speech "De descendentie-leer". He held the job from 1 October 1871 till 15 October 1877. On 15 October 1877, he started as professor of physiology and histology in Amsterdam (appointed Sept 12, 1871). He retired on 21 September 1909, because of health reasons. Place did not publish a lot, but had many students. He died 22 August 1911 in Amsterdam.
