German nobility, a prince of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and imperial general. Wilhelm was the son of Friedrich II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1676–1732) and Magdalena Augusta (1679–1740), daughter of Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst. In 1734 Wilhelm joined the service of Emperor Charles VI as General sergeant, leading two regiments. In 1738 he was Field Marshal Lieutenant General and in 1750 imperial general. On 8 November 1742 in Hamburg Wilhelm married Anna (1709-1758), daughter of Christian August of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp and aunt of Catherine the Great. The marriage remained childless. Wilhelm Carl Christian died on 31 May 1771 in Tonna. Link to Wikipedia biography (German)
