French composer whose reputation as a composer rests principally on two works: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" in 1897 and the opera "Ariane and Bluebeard." 1907. Dukas's other works include the overture "King Lear," 1883, the ballet "The Genie," 1912), and the "Sonnet de Ronsard," 1924, for voice and piano. Though he studied at the Paris Conservatory, was possessed of great talent and deemed a bright prospect, Dukas composed sparingly. He edited and orchestrated musical scores, but primarily, spent his life as a music critic for various journals. He was, as well, influential and respected as a teacher. Dukas was so critical and fastidious that he destroyed a number of his compositions and as he neared death, destroyed all his unfinished works. He died 5/17/1935, Paris. Link to Wikipedia biography
