English bluestocking, a civil rights activist, who campaigned for the abolition of slavery. She was from a noted family, the eldest of the nine children of Henry Thornton (1760-1815), an economist, banker, philanthropist and parliamentarian, and his wife, Marianne Sykes (1765–1815), daughter of Joseph Sykes, a merchant from Hull. After the death of her parents she became the head of the Thornton family. She lived in Clapham, London for most of her long life. She was the subject of a biography by her great nephew and beneficiary, E.M. Forster (1879–1970), the novelist, who was one of Henry Thornton's great-grandchildren. Marianne Thornton willed him 8,000 pounds to be held in trust, which he later used for his travel to Italy and education. Marianne Thornton died on 5 November 1887 at age ninety, when E.M. Forster was almost nine years old. Link to Wikipedia biography (German)
