Italian educator who was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree, in 1895. She worked primarily with subnormal kids in Rome tenements and gradually evolved her own teaching method. She established an international reputation in 1912 with her book "The Montessori Method," which was printed in English. She had one child, but never married.
