Norwegian jurist, professor, and rector at the University of Oslo. She was the only woman in her class when she started studying law and in 1981 she became the first woman in Norway to achieve a PhD in Law. In 1987 she became Norway's first female professor of Law, and in 1993 the first ever female rector at the University of Oslo, a position she held until 1998. Smith was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child. In the 1980s Smith became well-known to the public as the principal judge of the popular quiz show "Kvitt eller dobbelt" ('Double or Nothing'). Lucy Smith was married to Carsten Smith, a law professor at the University of Oslo and the Chief Justice of Norway's Supreme Court. Together they had three daughters who all became jurists.
