French theologian, philosopher and historian who was forced to stop publishing by the Roman Catholic church. Ordained a priest at the Oratory in 1886, he became the intimate friend of Maurice Blondel after being enthusiastic about his thesis entitled L'Action. Anxious to define what a Christian philosophy might be, he opposed "Christian realism and Greek idealism." Director of the Annales de philosophie chretienne (1905-1913), he was strongly criticized by various theologians. In 1906, the preceding work as well as the "Essays of religious philosophy" were condemned by the Roman censors. In 1913, L'Index condemned the Annals. Laberthonniere submitted to the definitive prohibition and did not publish anything again. He died on 6 October 1932 in Paris, aged 72. A number of his works were published posthumously.
