German writer who was very popular within the fiction genre. Generations of children in the German speaking countries grew up with his books. He was fascinated with stories and legends about cowboys, American Indians, the Old West as well as with tales from the Orient. His books are primarily products of his rich imagination as he did not travel to the US until he was age 66. That year, 1908, he and his wife visited the northern portion of New York state, seeing Buffalo, Albany and Niagara Falls. Asteroid 348 May has been named after him. May died on 30 March 1912, Radebeul, Germany. Link to Wikipedia biography
