Juan Guaid

Venezuelan industrial engineer, centrist politician and disputed head of state, serving as interim President of Venezuela since 23 January 2019. He has also been the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela since 5 January 2019. A member of the centrist social-democratic Popular Will party, he also serves as a federal deputy representing the state of Vargas. Under the Constitution of Venezuela the President of the National Assembly may serve as interim president if the office of President of the Republic becomes vacant. On 23 January Guaidó took a public oath to serve as interim President of Venezuela in the context of the ongoing presidential crisis, which followed the contested inauguration of Nicolás Maduro as President of Venezuela that same month. Guaidó's claim to the interim presidency was recognized by governments across the Americas and the world; others reject his claim, and some have called for dialogue to resolve the dispute. The pro-Maduro Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) rejects the National Assembly decisions, while the Supreme Tribunal of Justice of Venezuela in exile welcomed him as interim president. Together with Leopoldo López and other politicians, Guaidó was a founding member of the Popular Will political party in 2009. In 2014, he was the party's national coordinator. López (one of Venezuela's best-known opposition politicians, under house arrest as of January 2019) "mentored Guaidó for years" according to CNN, and the two speak several times daily. As Lopez's protegé, Guaidó was well known in his party and the Assembly, but not internationally; López named Guaidó to lead the Popular Will party in 2019. Time magazine described Guaidó as charismatic, stating that he had "unified a divided opposition." He is married to Fabiana Rosales, a journalist, and they have a daughter named Miranda.
