Swedish singer and operatic soprano, known as the "Swedish Nightingale." Her career in opera and on the concert stage was acclaimed as brilliant. With a rich coloratura voice she made her debut in 1838 and was soon idolized by the Swedish people. She gave up her opera career in 1849 but the following year agreed to tour the U.S. with P.T. Barnum. Her contract paid her $1,000 each for 150 concerts, a very substantial sum for that day. With her earnings, Lind endowed a Swedish hospital for poor kids. Died 11/02/1887, Malvern, England.
