French artist who is best remembered for "The Angelus," "The Gleaners" and "The Man With The Hoe." As he worked largely in dark and muddy colors, he was considered a sentimental traditionalist. Millet was self-taught, but was finally admitted to the French Academy in 1847. Temperamental, he lived a life of modest poverty. Millet died on 1/20/1875, Barbizon, France.
