French sailor, the brother of the painter Yahne Le Toumelin and uncle of Matthieu Ricard. He made a round-the-world solo trip from 19 September 1949 to 7 July 1952 on his sailboat Kurun ("thunder" in Breton). During his voyage of nearly three years, he made particular stopovers in the Canaries, Martinique, the Galapagos, Marquesas, New Guinea, Reunion, the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. Jacques-Yves Le Toumelin, along with Joshua Slocum, Alain Gerbault and Vito Dumas, is considered one of the last traditional navigators of the early twentieth century. He died on 10 November 2009.
