American military who rose to rank of Lieutenant General in the US Marines. A graduate of The Citadel, he saw active duty during WWII. In 1953 he earned a law degree and served in a variety of positions, including military aide to Vice President Hubert Humphrey in the 1960s. He retired from active duty in 1975; during his three-decade military service he earned the DSM (Distinguished Service Medal) and four Legion of Merit awards. In 1977 he served as consultant to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. That same year he became Inspector General of USAID (United States Agency for International Development). He stayed in the job for 17 years. He and his wife had two sons. He died at age 87 of congestive heart failure on October 14, 2007 at his Alexandria, VA home. Link to Wikipedia biography
