French agronomist, who was particularly successful in viticulture, establishing the protocol of the sulfur of the vines against the oidium. For this, he was awarded one of two grand prizes in agriculture awarded by the international jury of the Universal Exhibition of 1867 (Paris). The other prize was awarded to Louis Pasteur. The two men became friends. Mares was also a member of the Academy of Sciences and of the Academy of Agriculture. He died in Launac in the Haute-Garonne on 9 May 1901, aged 81.
