Italian cyclist, nicknamed "Gino the Pious" because of his strong religious faith. Hard-riding, he once caused a three-bicycle crash with two other cyclists who were trying to crowd him. By doing so, Bartali warned all other competitors not to interfere with him. Gino won the Giro d’Italia a record seven times as well as five Grand Tour titles (1938 and 1948), two Tour de France races. Allthough his career was interrupted during WWII, he rode his bicycle as a courier in the Italian resistance movement during the war. He is credited with helping Jews escape with forged documents. He retired from racing at age 40 (1954). The legendary cyclist died on May 5, 2000 in Ponte a Ema, Italy. Link to Wikipedia biography
