French film pioneer, a cinematographer employed by the Lumière brothers, credited as one of the inventors of the tracking shot (another inventor was Alexander Promio). Girel was the first to realize what the Lumière brothers called a Light panorama (today called a tracking shot), having filmed scenes from a moving boat on the Rhine in September 1896 for the film Panorama pris d'un bateau. Girel travelled the world to film and promote cinema, notably in Russia and Japan. He died on 14 February 1952, aged 78, in Arinthod. Link to Wikipedia biography (French)
