French aviator who flew a biplane, the White Bird, with Charles Nungesser in an attempt to establish a record by crossing the Atlantic from Paris to New York. They were sighted over England, Ireland, and then Newfoundland before they disappeared. They were last spotted on 5/08/1927, 13 days before Lindbergh made his historic flight. Some believe that they made it as far as Maine as fragments have been discovered in the dense woods in a wilderness near Machias, MA. Link to Wikipedia biography
