American astrogeologist and U.S. government official, the noted co-discoverer of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 which made a spectacular, televised collision with Jupiter in July 1994. Shoemaker was well known for his studies of terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona. Shoemaker was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program. He has the distinction of being the first person to have a lunar burial as his ashes were aboard NASA's Lunar Prospector which crashed into the earth's Moon on 31 July 1999 at 04:52 AM CDT at a speed of approximately 3,800 mph. He had always wanted to make a space shot with the astronauts but died in a car accident on 18 July 1997 in Alice Springs, Australia, aged 69. Link to Wikipedia biography
