English political activist. At the behest of Lady Warwick, who supported his Christian socialist views, he served as vicar of Thaxted in Essex from 1910 until his death in 1946. A colorful figure, he was dubbed The Red Vicar and stirred up great controversy when he hung three flags in the church: the Union Jack, the Sinn Fein banner and the Hammer and Sickle. In 1918 he formed The Catholic Crusade "to create the demand for the Catholic Faith." A charismatic figure, he wrote and argued for his causes. He died on July 2, 1942 and on his tombstone appear these words: "He loved justice and hated oppression." Link to Wikipedia biography
