German theatre actress who played numerous major roles in Berlin and Hamburg, for example in the classics Midsummer Night's Dream, Joan of Arc, Romeo and Juliet, Gretchen in Faust, Luise in Intrigue and Love, and the title role in Das Käthchen von Heilbronn, and also modern female figures. In 1902 she married the painter and writer Hans Baluschek, whom she had met a few years earlier through her connections in the theatre world. In 1900 he painted a declaration of love for her in the form of a fairy tale painting, in which he, as a knight, presents a rose to a lady with her facial features. However, their marriage was not happy and they divorced in 1913. Charlotte Baluschek did not continue her drama career after the marriage. She died in Berlin on 28 April 1969, aged 90.
