American bandleader, singer and composer, known for his great "Minnie the Moocher." He was also an author, dancer and actor, a performer for more than six decades in nightclubs, Broadway and films. During the roaring 20s he played in Harlem's famed Cotton Club, coming to epitomize the hot Jazz Age. Always the last word in hip, Calloway became known as "King of the Hi De Ho," even publishing a "Hepster's Dictionary." The second of six kids born to an attorney and his wife, he taught himself to play the drums and soon was flashing his own flamboyant style in clubs. Married twice, Calloway had five kids. He died the late evening of 11/18/1994, Wilmington, DE, after suffering a stroke on 6/12/1994. Link to Wikipedia biography
