Swati: The Self-Going Star (Libra 06 40’ to 20 00’). Swati is located by the bright star, Arcturus, in the constellation of Bootis.

The word swati means 'the sword' and reflects a strong desire for independence. This is the fifteenth nakshatra of the zodiac, having all its four quarters in Libra, spanning from 6°-40' to 20°-00'. The word 'swati' also means purity, or more correctly the first drop of rain which is considered to be very pure. The symbol for Swati is a single blade of grass blowing in the wind, reflecting the independent and autonomous nature of this asterism. Swati is ruled by Vayu, the God of the Wind and Prana. This Nakshatra is concerned with air, wind, breeze or knowledge of Akaash since Akaash is the abode of air. It has a chara or moveable nature and is ruled by restless Rahu, the North Node of the Moon. Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning is the female deity associated with Swati.
