They got two sons who would become physicians: Berend and Frederik Jacobus ten Cate (2 July 1876, Steenwijk - 6 May 1951, Den Dolder). He dissertated in medicine, wrote several book on internal medicine and worked as a gastroenterologist in Rotterdam. He was member of the Dutch Academy of Science, but the KNAW and other biography sources have no biography of this piscus. With the neurologist Hermann Oppenheim, he wrote "Zenuwziekten en opvoeding" (Nervous disease and education, 1905), a year after the death of his daughter Anna Célestine. He was a contributor to the "Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij", that since 15 January 1881 published the monthly "Maandblad tegen de Kwakzalverij". Founded 1 January 1881, The Dutch Association Against Quackery is regarded as the oldest sceptical association in the world. It still tries to de-mask claims that are not scientifically proved and even starts law suits against unofficial healers. In April 1916 Ten Cate published about the food additive "Cresco".
