He was the son of the soap manufacturer Barend Gorter (18 June 1828, Sneek - 16 October 1913 6 PM, Ambt Almelo) and the paintress Geertruid Catharina ten Cate Hoedemaker (1 January 1928, Lonneker - 3 May 1907 8 PM, Ambt Almelo), who married 17 December 1852 in Hengelo. He won a gold medal at the Paris salon in 1910. He was member of Arti et Amicitiae, Pulchri Studio and Sint Lucas guilds. He advised young painters and also gave painting lessons to Queen Wilhelmina, who he in 1922 accompanied during a trip to Norway. Other students were Marinus Bies, Carel Lodewijk Dake, his niece Hinke Gorter, Maria Elisabeth van Hengel, Albertus Gerhard Hulshoff Pol, Johan Meijer, Leendert Johan Muller and Henri van Os-Delhez. On 14 May 1903 he married Sophie Hélène Hertz (ca 1883 - 1979) in Amsterdam. They got two sons: Marc Barend Gorter (22 October 1906, A'dam - 1977) and Hans Paul Gorter (9 January 1914, A'dam - 2001).
