American race horse who captured the attention of the public in 2004 after he came in first in the Kentucky Derby held on May 1, 2004 and first in the Preakness Stakes two weeks later on May 15, 2004. Fans were wild for the horse, and he was the favorite for the Triple Crown race, the Belmont Stakes on June 5, 2004. Alas, he lost, coming in second. The animal's first trainer was murdered. He barely escaped being sold by his owner, Paul Chapman, who found another trainer for him. In his second year, the horse survived a training accident in which he struck his head against a steel beam. He fell unconscious with a badly fractured skull and nearly lost an eye. The horse made a remarkable recovery and went on to win a Philadelphia race on November 9, 2003 and followed that victory with another two weeks later. He went on to take five championships before he was entered in the 2004 Kentucky Derby. Link to Wikipedia biography
