French writer, a novelist and critic who won the Nobel Prize in 1921. The author of 50 volumes on a wide variety of subjects, he earned fame in his own lifetime. His work includes "Penguin Island" and "Thais." The son of a bookseller, he attended College Stanislas 1855-1862 and joined a publishing firm, writing literary articles and his first volume of poems. His first novel, "Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard" was a success when released in 1881. He was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1896. France married Marie-Valerie Guerin de Sauville in 1877 and they divorced in 1893. His life was greatly influenced by Madame Arman de Caillavet, with whom he had an affair until her death in 1910. He died on 10/12/1924, Tours, France. Since his death, France's reputation has diminished, but at least six of his books will probably survive the changing tastes of time. Link to Wikipedia biography
