German university teacher, meteorologist, and Nazi sympathiser, elected rector of the University of Hamburg 1931-1932. While rector, Wigand distinguished himself as a keen opponent of the Weimar Republic and promoter of a National Socialist-dominated student body. He studied mathematics, natural sciences and philosophy at the universities of Marburg and Munich from 1901 to 1906. In 1905 he received his doctorate in Marburg. After several years as an assistant in Marburg, Dresden and Halle, he habilitated in 1911 in Halle. During the First World War Wigand served as a balloon observer and meteorologist for the airship troops. From 1925 to 1929 he taught as a Professor of physics and meteorology at the University of Hohenheim. In 1929 he received a chair as Professor of meteorology at the University of Hamburg. Since 1929 he was also part-time head of the Meteorological Research Institute in Groß Borstel. He died on 18 December 1932 in Hamburg, aged 50. Link to Wikipedia biography (German)
