French artist famed by 1853 for her paintings of animals, which exhibited remarkable accuracy and vitality. The eldest of four kids who all became artists, she was the daughter of Raymond Bonheur, a painter. She exhibited regularly from the time she was 18 in the Salon, but was first broadly recognized from the Paris exhibition of 1855, at which she displayed her magnificent canvas, "The Horse Fair." In 1894, Bonheur was the first woman to receive the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. Ahead of her time in counter lifestyles, she drank, smoked, wore men's clothes and lived openly with her woman companion, Nathalie Micas. Died on 25 May 1899, near Fontainebleau, France.
