Canadian case of longevity, considered the world's oldest person with a documented birth. Delivered by a midwife at home, she later became a midwife herself. She also taught school at one time and was a devout Catholic. Meilleur was a vegetarian who has always espoused the philosophy and practice of hard work. She had 14 kids, was grandmother to 80 and great-grandmother to 60. In 1997 she claimed the distinction of being the world's oldest living human. It was her custom to go to bed early; she did not drink and gave up smoking in her '90s. She spent the last ten years in a nursing home in Borbeil, Ontario before she died quietly of a blood clot the afternoon of 4/16/1998, at 117. She was survived by one son and three daughters.
