Bulgarian monarch, serious, capable and quietly affectionate. His mother died in 1899. After living as a bachelor to nearly age 40, he married Giovanna di Savoia. During WW II he joined the Allies but would not declare war on Russia. He was shot in a railroad station near Sofia, considered to be an assassination by the Nazis, on 28 August 1943.
