Dutch photographer from a noted Sephardic family. His father Josua Jessurun de Mesquita was a teacher Hebrew and German at the Amsterdam Stedelijk gymnasium. He also followed the Stedelijk Gymnasium and met Frans Coenen, a classmate and Herman Gorter. He got interest in art and literature and founded in 1881 with Albert Verwey the discussion group Eloquentia. In 1883 he left the gymnasium for unknown reasons. In September 1888 he rented a room and tried to earn an income as photographer. In 1889 he published the Gids voor den Amateur-Fotograaf (Guide for the amateur photographer). He was one of the first to see photography as an art, not just a craft. He also wrote some prose, and sent it to the New Guide, but without success. On 1 April 1890 he was found death by the painter Isaac Israels. He had committed suicide with potassium cyanide. Link to Dutch Wikipedia
