French journalist, editor-in-chief of Elle magazine from 1995. He was married; two children. Bauby was loved for his impassioned approach to life. When he suffered a rare kind of stroke following a car accident in December 1995, he went into a coma for 20 days, and emerged from it to discover that the only thing that functioned in his body was his left eye. He could see, and by blinking, he could communicate. In this way, Bauby wrote "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." He died on 3/09/1997, a few days after the book was published.
