American trial attorney with the U.S. Dept of Justice 1960-1962. Entering politics, he became executive assistant to U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie 1962-1965, when he re-entered the private sector for 12 years. While in private legal practice, he served as Chairman of the Maine Dem. Committee 1966-1968. In 1974, Mitchell ran for Governor and lost. He served as U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, U.S. District Judge and in 1980, was elected Senator from Massachusetts. He served as Senate Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995. Upon leaving office, he became a negotiator for peace, being the prime force behind the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, and was the main investigator in two "Mitchell Reports", one on the Arab–Israeli conflict (2001) and one on the use of performance enhancing drugs in baseball (2007).
