German prince who was the brother of King Friedrich I of Württemberg. Duke Eugen was the third child of Friedrich Eugen, Duke of Württemberg (1732–1797), and his wife, Margravine Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt (1736–1798). Eugen was educated by Johann Georg Schlosser, a brother of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The prince entered the Army of the Kingdom of Prussia. On 21 January 1787, in Meiningen, he married Princess Luise of Stolberg-Gedern, daughter of Prince Christian Karl of Stolberg-Gedern and Countess Eleanore Reuss of Lobenstein. Luise was the widow of Carl Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. They had five children, From 1795 Eugen was governor of the fortress of Glogau. In the War of the Fourth Coalition, at the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt he commanded the Reserve cavalry of the Prussian Army. On 18 October 1806 he fought at the Battle of Halle where he was defeated by Marshal Jean Bernadotte (who later became King Carl XIV Johan of Sweden). Carlsruhe became the permanent residence of Duke Eugen, which he endowed with a theatre and chapel. The Duke was a great patron of the composer Carl Maria von Weber, who became his secretary and in September 1806 he was designated as Kapellmeister at Carlsruhe. He died on 20 June 1822, aged 63, in Meiningen. Link to Wikipedia biography
