Dutch Freudian psychiatrist. He had a brother Johan, also a brilliant physician, who died early. His brother in law was the magic-realistic painter Pyke Koch. He was a fast and brilliant learner, who already became a physician at age 21 states the Dutch Journal of Medicine. He studied under the Jewish neurologist Wertheim Salomonsen (18 Feb 1864, Almelo - 16 September 1922, Amsterdam) and Winkler to become a neurologist. He belonged to the first Freudian psychiatrists in the Netherlands. He first worked in Zutphen, but became from 1909 till his retirement in 1940 a neurologist/psychiatrist , later director of the Willem-Arntst Hospital. With Karl Abraham and Ernest Jones he wrote a classic article about "The Female Castration Complex". He died 16 September 1954 after a long disease.
