Life Story

Story of person and major life events assoicated with this Kundali

Dutch classical scholar, philosopher, politician, educator and professor at the Protestant Free University of Amsterdam. His parents were the baker Robert Karsiens Woltjer (16 October 1816, Finsterwolde - 9 November 1882, Groningen) and Annechien Jans Lusthof (21 December 1818, Kolham- 26 May 1898 13h30, Groningen). His parents had no money to let their children study. But Jan was an extremely bright child. After finishing primary education (1861), he started at age 12 to learn for school teacher (1867) to earn some money and used his spare time to become a teacher French (1867), Mathematics (1868) and German (1870). He also learned himself Greek and Latin and was admitted to the University of Groningen in 1872. Here he studied classical languages till 1876, paying his study by giving lessons. While teaching classical languages at a local gymnasium (1 Sept 1877 - 1 Aug 1881)), he dissertated on 10 October 1877 under Cornelis Marinus Francken (1820-1900) with "Lucretii philosophia cum fontibus comparata", a classical study on poem "De rerum natura" (On the Nature of Things) by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius (c. 99 BC – c. 55 BC). In 1881 he moved to Amsterdam to become professor at the Free University, which position he would keep until his death in 1917. He combined it with his job as teacher and rector of the Dutch reformed Gymnasium in Amsterdam. In 1902 he became member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was involved in many educational organizations and was a member of the Senate for the Anti Revolutionaire Partij from 1902 to 1917. Personal Woltjer married on 28 September 1877 Marchien Janssonius (29 May 1851-1919). They had eight children, four of them died young. His son Robert Herman Woltjer (1878-1955) also became a classicist. Dr. R.H. (Rob) Woltjer served like his father in the Dutch parliament. His daughter Hillegonda Hester (1 march 1880, Groningen - 24 June 1938, Leiden) married the theologian dr. JG Ubbink (1875-1944). His son Herman Robert Woltjer (16 February 1887, Amsterdam - 18 February 1974, Zutphen) became a professor in physics in Bandung (Java). The youngest son Jan Woltjer, Jr. (1891-1946) was an astronomer and professor of theoretical astronomy. Woltjer died 28 July 1917 in Amsterdam. Link to Wikipedia
